If a vehicle is being sold out of state, the owner of the vehicle must:
- Complete the Transfer of Title Owner section on the back of the Kentucky Title for individual-to-individual sale.
- Print name and address of the buyer/ transferee.
- Date of transfer/ sale.
- The current odometer reading is required to be listed on the title.
- Transferor/ seller signatures with notarization by a notary public with a seal.
- Retain a copy of the front and back of the title for personal records and to cancel registration with your County Clerk's Office.
- Remove license plate. The license plate can be reissued to another vehicle through our office ($11 reissue fee) unless expired, or it can be turned in at any motor vehicle branch location for recycling.
To ensure the vehicle is removed from the tax records:
Return copy of the front and back of the filled-out title to the County Clerk's Office.
If the current year taxes have not been paid, they will be due at the time of the cancellation process. This can be done at any of our eight motor vehicle service branch locations or by mail.
