How to Renew Vehicles & Boats


Motor vehicle license plates are renewed in the vehicle owner's birth month, except for personalized and some special plates. To renew, you must have a registration certificate and a current Kentucky insurance card if your insurance cannot be verified by computer. Verification depends on your company's compliance with House Bill 29. Mandatory Insurance Law

Accepted methods of payment are cash, money order, personal checks, and cashier’s check. MasterCard, Visa, AMX and Discover are also accepted.

Five Convenient Ways to ReNew Your Registration!

1. Telephone ReNew

Renew by Telephone:  You may call in your vehicle registration 24 hours a day and 7 days a week from home, work or  while you're on vacation!

  • Registration must not be expired
  • Property tax must not be delinquent on any vehicle
  • Insurance must be current and verifiable
  • Address on current registration must be correct

Have the following information available when you call:

  1. Title number of the vehicle to be renewed
  2. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  3. Credit card information (Visa / MasterCard / AMX / Discover)
  4. Daytime phone number

You will receive your completed renewal by mail in 3 - 5 business days.

2. Renew on-line:

Renew your registration from the comfort of your home or office. Visit the Kentucky Motor Vehicle Licensing System at HTTP://MVL.KY.GOV to start the process.

You will receive your completed renewal by mail in 3 - 5 business days.

3. Mail-In Renewal:

Avoid the lines and use our Mail-In Renewal Service. A $2.00 fee is added to cover postage and handling. Send registration certificate, current KY insurance card, and payment (plus a $2.00 mail-in fee Credit card information (Visa / MasterCard / AMX / Discover) to Jefferson County Clerk, P.O. Box 33033, Louisville, KY 40232-3033.

You will receive your completed renewal by mail in 3 - 5 business days.

*If paying by credit card, include a piece of paper that contains the following: Your name printed as it appears on your credit card, type of credit card you are using, and the account number and expiration date as listed on the face of the credit card.

In processing any transaction that requires proof of insurance and the Commonwealth of Kentucky Automated Vehicle Information System (AVIS) does not verify the insurance automatically, the 45-day rule may come into play. If you provide the Clerk’s Office an insurance card as proof of insurance, the card cannot have an Effective/Issue date older than 45 days from the date that it is presented. It is important to note that the effective date of the policy may be different than the effective date of the insurance card. For acceptance the Clerk’s Office is concerned with the date the card was issued, not the policy. This applies to Personal Policies only. http://transportation.ky.gov

4. Branch Offices:

5. Downtown Drop Box:

Enjoy same day service when you use the drop box at the Downtown Branch. Deposit your registration certificate, current KY insurance card, and payment in a sealed envelope in the box located inside the Downtown Branch by 8:30 a.m. and pick up the renewal between 4 - 4:30 p.m. the same day. If you place your paperwork in the drop box after 8:30 a.m. you can pick up your renewal after 4 p.m. the following day.

Motor Boat Renewals

All motor boat registrations and transfers are handled by the County Clerk's Office. Kentucky law requires all boats having motors to be registered if operated on public waters. To register a boat you must have your registration certificate. Boat renewals and property tax payments may be processed in the same ways that you renew a motor vehicle (see above) except by the internet.
